John Klorer papers, 1920-1946.

This collection consists of papers relating to the engineering career of John Klorer of New Orleans, La. Included are typed and handwritten letters and forms, printed material, notebooks, hand-drawn diagrams, newspaper clippings, circulars, maps, and a blueprint. These papers include his appointment as supervising engineer for New Orleans; records relating to the New Orleans Sewerage and Water Board; directives from the Defense Plant Corporation in Washington, DC, during wartime; and letters from Senators John H. Overton and Allen J. Ellender.

The Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans was created by Act #6 of the Louisiana Legislature in 1899. Its original membership was sixteen, one member from each of the city's seven municipal districts and the nine members of the already constituted Drainage Commission. The latter body had been established by Act #114 of the 1896 Legislature with "full power to control and execute the drainage of the City of New Orleans." John Klorer, born Nov. 25, 1874, in New Orleans, graduated with the Tulane University Class of 1895 in civil engineering. He worked as an engineer in Louisiana in various capacities beginning in 1895. He was a chief engineer with the Levee Board in New Orleans (1930-1934), chief engineer with the State of Louisiana (1935-1936), and consulting and planning engineer with the Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans.
